Whales are our specialty! We will have daily opportunities to observe humpback whales in Frederick Sound, observe and photograph the amazing cooperative ‘bubble-net’ feeding lunges.
While Southeast Alaska offers an incredible array of opportunities for nature photography, it also presents its challenges. The low light of an overcast day, the sudden sighting of wildlife that just won't sit still, or the gentle motion of the boat on the water all present special challenges for the nature photographer. That's why our special photography expeditions are led by a professional nature photographer. If you're a little uncertain about your abilities behind the lens, you'll be able to receive instant "on the spot" advice from a professional on how to make the most of your equipment and ability as you make memories that will last forever with your camera. Scenics include; calving glaciers, ice bergs, temperate old growth rain forest, isolated beaches, small boat commercial fishing, spawning-jumping salmon and a myriad of sea birds.
As you cruise the protected channels & fjords of the Inside Passage, you'll learn how to use light to your best advantage. Whether it's capturing a spectacular Southeast sunset, or creating surreal images using the beautiful blue light reflected by glacier ice, the essence of nature photography in this incredible region is striving to reflect the dynamic nature of this ever-changing landscape. Many nature photographers find that their images of Southeast Alaska speak far more profoundly than words ever could of the wild and precious beauty of Alaska's Inside Passage. Highlights of the trip might include a walk around a grounded glacier or gentle hikes through the temperate rainforest beneath tree limbs cloaked in moss. Perhaps we'll explore the tiny world held captive in the tide pools, watch waterfalls tumble down steep mountains, or visit a Native village to meet and learn about the people who, for centuries, have lived & created art, based on the natural world, in this area. A soak in natural hot springs might be in order after a walk to a mountain lake. Or maybe the evening calls for a peaceful kayak or skiff excursion in a secluded bay.
